No Jerk Marketing

Okay everyone should know this already but I’m going to bring it up for everyone anyway especially because it seems I need to hear it the most sometimes.

Stay away from the tendency to participate in Jerk marketing, even if you are just trying to tell the truth, point people in the right direction, and help them.

So what do I mean by “Jerk Marketing” I mean the tendency to point out the flaws of specific businesses, marketers, strategies, or individuals when carrying out marketing to promote ourselves, our products, our companies, our training and information.

Look I am an advocate for marketers in this industry, especially people who are semi-new or who are just coming into the industry for the first time. I want everyone to have absolutely the best experience and success possible.

It’s not my First Cruise

This isn’t my first cruise, I’m not fresh off the boat, and my eyes are wide open to things that happen in this industry.

I feel a personal responsibility and devotion to address certain facts and circumstances of the industry so people will have the greatest impact creating the success they desire. I don’t pretend not to see the flaws, the blemishes, and pitfalls, instead I try and steer people clear of them.

I like to give what I feel is a fair picture of things even if it steps on the toes of others who don’t appreciate me for it.

Too much of this industry is built around hype and just recruiting as many people as possible into the industry. When those people drop out of their teams, they just recruit more people and the cycle continues. Unfortunately, some people build their careers on this and little more. That in my opinion is a scam.

You see, what often happens is people get sold on unreasonable expectations and ideas about what it is going to take to succeed, how long it will take to get there, and how much work is involved.

Marketers and companies stretch the truth so to speak, or accentuate certain ideas about how things can work and neglect to mention other parts that may not be so perfect.

Some marketers have become famous for these recruiting tactics and it ends up burning a lot of people and creating negative numbers for the industry, bad feelings between people, attitudes of mistrust, and the wrong type of ideas about this otherwise fantastic business.

It pisses me off is what I am trying to say.

So it is hard sometimes for me to keep it in check even when I am trying to give a good and what I believe is a fair assessment of an opportunity, business, system, etc.

I want the best for the individual marketer not some corporate entity, system, or industry leader. I guess I’ve always been a bit of a trouble maker that way perhaps.

Sometimes I guess I take it a little too far and I come across as a “Jerk Marketer” even if it wasn’t my intention.

Okay maybe I was just a little bit…

Good Intentions

So, my intentions were good and based in love and on the intention to help marketers in the industry to achieve success, abundance, and true freedom in life.

I’m passionate about that and it blinded me a little, and corrupted my better judgment and I ended up promoting a piece I should have been more considerate, careful, and cautious with. It wasn’t my intention to create content anyone felt negative about or that it came across as jerk marketing.

After receiving a copy of a legal complaint made to my web host and a request to remove the content in 48hrs or have it blocked, I had to re-evaluate the content more carefully. When I did I could see their point and removed not only my review but also a top ranked video along with it.

So what’s my Point?

My Point… Be careful what you are putting out there even if your intentions are good. It is easy to get carried away if you are passionate about your company, your cause, your mission in life, etc. and inadvertently step on the toes of others when you didn’t intend to.

It probably won’t matter all that much if you’re buried 5 to 10 pages deep in the search engine results, but it’s a whole lot different when you’re on the front page of Google and the company big wigs are paying attention to what you’re up to because you are outranking all their reps.

So be extra careful in your marketing to be positive and inspiring if you can be and stay away from Jerk marketing.

You don’t want to have to remove the content you worked so hard to create, optimize, backlink, bookmark, etc. and push to get on the front page of Google only to have it blacklisted.

Lesson learned…

Squidoo Lens is Tough to Crack

 Before I get right into it today let me just explain to you a few thoughts about Google, linking, and how to rank in the search engines online. Pretty much the name of the game even in spite of the Google Panda updates is still about linking and link popularity. That is still ultimately the largest most prominent feature that is going to get you ranked in the search engines.

Now there are right ways and wrong ways about going about getting these links, which links are good, which links are bad, how many you can add over a period of time, relevancy, popularity, etc. If you are brand new to the SEO game it can seem overwhelming at first. But it really isn’t so complicated when you understand the basics of it and you have someone who isn’t some teched out alien trying to explain it to you after they’ve had way too much Starbucks and way too little sleep.

In fact that’s why we put the SEO guide up on the website to make all that SEO stuff friendly and down to earth in a one stop SEO resource stop. If you haven’t checked it out yet you really should. Leave me your thoughts when you do I’d love to hear what people think of the new changes.

But anyway back to what I was saying… Basically the thinking has always been the more sites that link to you the better. It’s a pretty simple concept really. And there have been and there still are excellent ways to get links to you site to build that popularity and rank online.

Some of the best strategies have included:

  1. Article Marketing
  2. Web 2.0 Link Building
  3. Social Bookmarking
  4. Forum Backlinks
  5. Writing Press Releases

They are still probably the best and most powerful ways to build links to your site and increase your search engine rankings if done properly. And that is really the key. My point is that doing it right has become a little harder than it once was when not so long ago you could bombard article directories with high page ranks all across the web with poorly spun articles and reap awesome results for it.

Those kinds of tactics today will get your content impounded and your account suspended today if you are not careful. There are still auto-submission directories out there that you can plaster but they don’t command near the page rank and respect they once did when it comes to the search engines, and Google has become very good at identifying duplicate content (articles created from the same content and spun into variations) identifying it as such and not giving you credit for the links.

Which really brings me to my point today which is just how crafty the web is at identifying duplicate and spun content. Tonight I was posting content to several of the best Web 2.0 sites with a brand new spun article that I only intend to use on 10 or so of the best Web 2.0 sites. I had spun the article and done a lot of hands on work to make it unique…

Let me digress here a minute and tell you that Web 2.0 sites are still awesome to get backlinks from if you do it correctly…

So anyway, here I am submitting this content to these top 10 or so sites and before I am done I have messages from Squidoo that I’ve got duplicate content and need to address it or it will be taken off their site! We’re talking about less than an hour or so and I haven’t even finished uploading the last of the batch of these largely handspun articles!

So my point is this… if a Squidoo lens is that tough to crack, then how much tougher is Google going to be to fool? Makes a person seriously consider the consequences doesn’t it?

What’s the deal with Anchor Text…

If you want top rankings for your content and websites you’ll need to be paying very close attention to the anchor text you use.

Anchor text is a critical portion of your SEO strategy and is critical for you to understand how to get the most bangs for your buck. If you are doing a lot of blog marketing and article marketing (and you should be) you want to get the most out of all your carefully crafted effort right?

Well if you are not taking advantage of anchor text you are missing out on a huge piece of the puzzle.

So what is anchor text:

Anchor text is the word text you use when you create a link to a website. I’m not talking about the URL here though that can be used also. What I am talking about is a text link. It is specific text that you have turned into a link in a piece of content.  Another common word for anchor text is what is called a “hyperlink.” It’s really nothing more than a word or phrase that links to another website.

Search engines look at these anchor text links that point to your site from other places on the web determine what that text is about and then rank your content as it pertains to that term. Whatever you use as anchor text linking back to your site or content is what you are telling Google your content is about.  Google looks at these links then checks your content to see if it is relevant and then begins ranking you for it.

So it goes almost without mentioning that if you want to rank higher for a specific keyword, then use it in your anchor text back-linking strategy. Just be sure not to overdo it and arouse the suspicious of the search engines. Search engines want everything to be a level playing field for everyone and they abhor SEO manipulations, so don’t get caught with your hands in the cookie jar so to speak.

The relevancy of the anchor text to your content on your page and on the page the link came from are also important mitigating factors as well. There are four principle types or classes of anchor text and each provides your content with a different level of value and each needs to be taken into account in formulating your anchor text strategy.

 

Here are the four Anchor Text types and their relative Value:

  • ”Exact Match” Text Anchor (Gold)
  • ”Broad Match” Anchor Text (Silver)
  • ”Commonly Match” Anchor Text (Bronze)
  • ”URL Anchor Text” (Runner up)

 

Exact Key Word Anchor Text links use the exact keywords you want to rank for in the search engines for that specific content. If you want to rank for a specific term then use that text as your link to the specific content. It’s rather simple really.

Broad Match Anchor Text is relevant anchor text but it is not as specific as the number one term you want to rank for. For example: If you wanted to rank for MLM Tips and that would be your “Exact Match” term, then what other terms are related that get the same type traffic that you would benefit from as well? Terms like MLM help, MLM advice, Network Marketing advice, etc. This is the essence of a broad match term.

Common used anchor text includes “click here”, “here”, “website” etc. They are not thrilling terms and won’t get fired up to rank for these terms but they have their place never the less in keeping your link strategy looking natural and not manipulated by SEO strategies.

This is important because you don’t want to attract undue attention from the search engines by overpowering your link blueprint with unnatural SEO manipulated fingerprints that spell trouble for you.

Plain old URL anchor text type is the last anchor text type, and this  is really nothing more than a URL to link to your website with i.e. http://website.com, no anchor text.

So Why Does all This Matter So Much:

Because in this day and age there isn’t a way to rank well for any highly competitive keywords without heavy link building involved. Indeed there are ways to over-rev this engine and get you faster rankings by ignoring the redline on the primary keyword tach, but it comes with a price. Anchor text leaves the biggest footprint for Google to find and penalize you for if you are not smart about things.

So you must use a wide variety of anchor text types in a natural looking ratio for Google to pass over your site without you eventually getting spanked.

My credible expert mentors suggest the following ratio for lasting search engine positions and rank:

■50% Primary Keyword Anchor Text

 ■30% Relevant Keywords Anchor Text

 ■10% Generic (click here, website etc.) Keywords

 ■10% URL No Anchor Text

 

This should give you enough exact keyword anchor text gas to get you the rankings you desire without blowing your search engine up.
